Durga Puja Saree Look: What to Wear Underneath for Pandal-Hopping

For a Durga Puja saree look that survives pandal-hopping, wear a high-waist, thigh-length shaper under a cotton petticoat, a nude or matching bra under a lined blouse, and flat footwear you have broken in. The shorts keep pleats lying flat and stop your thighs rubbing over kilometres of walking, and cotton layers cope better with October humidity than satin.

Why Puja dressing is different

Pujo means five days on your feet. From Shashthi to Dashami you are queuing outside the big pandals for an hour or more, being carried along by the crowd, climbing metro stairs, squeezing into a shared taxi, then sitting on a plastic chair at the para pandal for adda that runs past midnight. Kolkata in late September and October is usually still warm and sticky, and a late shower is never a surprise.

The saree on top gets all the attention, but what is underneath decides how comfortable you still are at 1 AM. The layer next to your skin has to handle sweat, walking and sitting, and still keep the drape neat for photos in front of the protima.

What should you wear under each Puja saree?

Saree How it behaves What works underneath
Tant (handloom cotton) Crisp, light, often starched; pleats puff out and the weave can be slightly see-through Cotton petticoat in the saree colour, high-waist shaper so the waist tuck lies flat, nude bra
Garad or korial (off-white silk, red border) Pale and semi-sheer, so lines and colours underneath show in daylight Nude shaper and bra (never white), cream or skin-tone petticoat; check the shaper hem by a window
Dhakai jamdani and other fine weaves Very fine, floaty and quite transparent Nude everything, a petticoat matched closely to the saree, skin-colour stockings if the petticoat is thin
Banarasi or heavier silk for evenings Holds its shape well but is warm and heavy at the waist Keep the layer underneath light: shaper shorts rather than a full bodysuit for long nights

The layer underneath, piece by piece

Shapewear: shorts over a bodysuit

For pandal-hopping, the high-waist tummy tucker is the practical choice. It smooths the lower belly and waist where the saree is tucked, the silicone grip band keeps it from sliding when you climb stairs or sit on a bench, and the thigh coverage helps prevent chafing on long walks. A one-piece bodysuit can look lovely, but pandal and restaurant washrooms are cramped and crowded, and shorts are far quicker to manage there. You will find other options in our saree shapewear collection.

Petticoat

Choose cotton, in the saree's base colour. Satin and synthetic petticoats trap heat and cling when you sweat. The order is simple: shaper first, then the petticoat tied firmly over it at your usual saree height. Snug is the goal, not tight; a drawstring pulled hard will dig in long before the evening is over.

Bra and blouse

A lined cotton blouse with a nude bra is the safest choice under pale sarees. If your blouse has a deep or open back, the options are covered in what to wear under a backless blouse.

Size

Check the tummy tucker size chart and buy your true size. Don't size down for Puja. Between bhog khichuri, phuchka and egg rolls, you will want room to breathe.

A day-by-day plan for the five days

  • Shashthi and Saptami evenings: the first big outings and the first big crowds. Shaper and cotton petticoat, flat sandals, a small cross-body bag.
  • Ashtami morning anjali: many people fast until anjali. Keep compression gentle on an empty stomach. If you want smoothing, wear the shorts in your true size and make sure you can take a full breath, then have bhog before heading out again.
  • Ashtami and Navami nights: usually the longest walks and latest nights, and the likeliest time for thigh chafing. Don't skip the shorts, and wear a freshly washed pair. If you join the dhunuchi naach, with arms raised and a smoking clay burner in hand, this is where the grip band earns its place.
  • Dashami and sindoor khela: the red-bordered white saree comes out, and sindoor gets everywhere near the neckline. Wear underpinnings you don't mind marking, and save your newest nude bra for another day.

Rotate at least two shapers through the five days. A piece that is still damp from last night's wash won't hold properly, and the fabric needs time to recover its stretch.

How do you stay comfortable in long pandal queues?

  1. Put the shaper on just before you leave home, not hours earlier.
  2. Pin the pleats at the waist with two or three safety pins so the crowd can't pull them open.
  3. Keep the hem about an inch off the ground. Pandal grounds get muddy after a shower.
  4. Carry a cotton handkerchief for sweat, a water bottle and a few spare safety pins.
  5. Drink water through the evening, not only when you get home.
  6. If you feel numbness, tingling, dizziness or can't breathe deeply, take the shapewear off at the next washroom. No photo is worth that.
  7. Back home, hand wash the shaper in cool water and dry it in shade under a fan.

If humidity is your main worry, our guide to wearing shapewear in hot, humid weather has more on sweat and washing.

Keep the saree as grand as you like, but keep everything under it light, cotton and in your true size. Shorts for walking, a cotton petticoat, a nude bra and broken-in footwear will carry you from Shashthi to Dashami.

Frequently asked questions

Which saree is traditionally worn for Durga Puja?

The white or off-white saree with a red border, often a garad or a lal paar tant, is the classic choice, especially on Ashtami and for sindoor khela on Dashami. On the other evenings, any saree you can walk comfortably in works.

Can I wear shapewear under a cotton tant saree?

Yes. A nude, high-waist shaper under a cotton petticoat keeps the waist smooth, but tant can be slightly sheer, so check the shaper's hem in daylight before you go.

How do I stop tant saree pleats from puffing out?

Press the pleats the night before, pin them at the waist, and keep the layer underneath smooth so the waistband lies flat. Slightly fewer, deeper pleats also sit flatter in a stiff, starched tant.

What footwear is best for pandal-hopping?

Flat or low sandals you have already worn for a few days, such as kolhapuris. Avoid new heels, and keep a couple of plasters in your bag for shoe bites.
