How to Wear a Skirt in Winter: Warm Looks That Aren't Bulky
To wear a skirt in winter, keep your legs warm and your top half in proportion. Wear fleece-lined stockings that look sheer from a distance, or black stockings, under midi, pencil, mini and denim skirts. Add ankle or knee-high boots, or juttis with footless stockings, and balance the skirt with knitwear and a coat that is cropped at the waist or longer than the hem.
In much of North India, skirts go to the back of the wardrobe in November and come out again in March. They don't have to. From a December office day in Noida to a New Year's dinner in Chandigarh, a skirt can be warm enough if the layers underneath and on top are right, and it often looks more put-together than yet another pair of jeans.
Which skirts work best in winter?
| Skirt | Look for | On your legs | Shoes | On top |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Midi (pleated, A-line, slip) | Wool blends, corduroy, heavier satin | Fleece-lined (skin tone) or black | Knee-high or ankle boots, block heels | A fine knit tucked in, or a cropped jacket |
| Pencil | Suiting, ponte, wool blends | Black or skin colour | Pumps, loafers | A shirt and blazer, or a fine-knit sweater |
| Mini | Tweed, corduroy, denim, leather-look | Black | Ankle boots, chunky sneakers | An oversized sweater |
| Denim, knee-length or midi | Heavier denim | Black or fleece-lined skin tone | Ankle boots, sneakers | A chunky knit or a denim jacket over a turtleneck |
| Long skirt with a short kurta | Velvet, silk, lined cotton | Footless fleece-lined stockings | Juttis, mojaris | A shawl or a short embroidered jacket |
Heavier fabrics do half the work. A wool-blend or corduroy skirt blocks wind far better than a thin rayon one, and a lined skirt is warmer than an unlined one in the same fabric.
What should you wear on your legs under a winter skirt?
- Fleece-lined stockings for cold days. Our fleece-lined winter stockings have a soft brushed fleece inside and an outer knit that looks dark brown in the pack and turns a sheer skin tone once stretched on, so your legs look close to bare from a normal distance but feel like warm leggings. They are thicker to the touch than summer stockings and look like warm hosiery up close. Choose the version with socks for boots and closed shoes, and the footless version for heels, sandals and juttis. Our guide on how fleece-lined sheer-look stockings work explains the construction.
- Black stockings for the office and evenings. The anti-scratch stretchable stockings come in black and a warm skin shade, two pairs to a pack. They are featherlight rather than fleece-lined, so they suit heated offices, restaurants and milder days best.
- Thermal leggings under a maxi. A floor-length skirt hides whatever is underneath, so thermals work for long outdoor days.
- What to avoid. Thick thermals under a short or fitted skirt show at the hem and add bulk at the hips. Two pairs of stockings, one over the other, twist and roll.
Size stockings by waist and hips using the stockings size chart; a 21 to 23 inch waist with 30 to 32 inch hips is an XS, for example. For fleece-lined pairs, choose the larger size if you are on the line.
How do you balance knitwear with a skirt?
Winter tops are bulkier than summer ones, so proportion matters more.
- Chunky with slim. A thick cable-knit or oversized sweater looks best with a slim skirt, such as a pencil, a mini or a straight denim.
- Fine with full. A pleated or A-line midi needs a fine knit or a turtleneck tucked in at the waist, or the outfit turns into one wide shape.
- Half-tuck or belt. A front half-tuck, or a thin belt over the sweater at the waist, shows where the skirt begins.
- Coat length. Choose a jacket that stops at the waist, or a coat that falls below the hem of the skirt. A coat that stops just short of the hem, with a sliver of skirt peeping out, looks unplanned.
- Warmth from the base layer. A thin thermal top under one sweater is often warmer and smoother than two sweaters.
Knit and jersey skirts cling, which shows every line underneath. If you want a smoother line at the waist and hips, the high-waist tummy tucker sits under the skirt like a pair of shorts; put your stockings on first so the shorts sit over the stocking waistband.
How do you wear a skirt to the office in winter, and to a party?
At the office, stick to a pencil skirt or an A-line midi in a wool blend, with a fine-knit sweater or a shirt and blazer. Skin-colour or black stockings and block heels, loafers or ankle boots keep it formal. Many offices swing between warm heaters and cold AC, so dress in layers you can take off at your desk. Our guide to winter office wear covers the rest of the work wardrobe.
At a party, velvet, sequinned and satin skirts come into their own. Sheer black stockings with heels suit indoor venues; for a rooftop, a lawn or an open-air New Year's dinner, switch to fleece-lined stockings and carry a stole. Satin and polyester skirts are the most likely to cling to stockings in dry winter air, and our guide on stopping static cling has the fixes.
How do you stay warm in a skirt without looking bulky?
- Start with the legs. Most of the cold you feel in a skirt is at the legs, so fleece-lined stockings make more difference than a heavier sweater.
- Close the gaps. Cover the ankles with boots or socks, the neck with a scarf, and the wrists with longer sleeves or gloves.
- Layer thin. Base layer, one knit and a coat are warmer and neater than three thick layers.
- Choose lined skirts, or add a slip. A lining stops wind blowing straight through wool or tweed. A cotton slip does the same job under an unlined skirt.
- Keep the waistband smooth. Tuck in only thin layers. Wear a thick sweater out over the skirt instead.
- Look after the fleece. Hand wash fleece-lined stockings in cold water, turn them inside out to dry in the shade, and keep them away from heaters, which flatten the fleece.
A winter skirt works when the legs are warm, the top half is in proportion and the shoes close the gap at the ankle. Fleece-lined stockings do most of the work on cold days, black stockings carry the office and evening looks, and a coat that is cropped or longer than the hem finishes the outfit.

Yes. With fleece-lined stockings, a lined skirt, boots and a proper coat, a skirt can be comfortable through December and January, even on foggy mornings.
What do you wear under a skirt in winter to stay warm?
Fleece-lined stockings are the warmest option that still looks like bare or sheer legs. Under a floor-length skirt, thermal leggings also work because nothing shows.
Which shoes go with a skirt in winter?
Ankle and knee-high boots are the warmest. Loafers and pumps suit the office, and juttis work with ethnic skirts and footless stockings, with thermal skin socks if your feet get cold.
Can I wear a midi skirt with sneakers in winter?
Yes, for casual days. Add stockings or socks, a chunky knit and a short jacket to keep the look balanced.
Should winter stockings be skin colour or black?
Either works. Fleece-lined skin-tone stockings give a bare-leg look with warmth, while black suits dark skirts, office wear and evening looks.
