How to Wear Stockings with a Saree: Shade, Layering and Footwear

Wear skin-tone stockings under a saree when the drape is sheer, when your thighs rub on long function days, or when it's cold. Put them on first, before shapewear and petticoat, pull the waistband up to your natural waist and match the shade to the skin on your feet. With sandals, heels or juttis, choose footless stockings.

Why wear stockings with a saree at all?

Most of the time you don't need them. A cotton or silk saree over a well-fitted petticoat covers the legs completely. Stockings are worth adding in four situations.

  • Sheer drapes. Chiffon, georgette, net, organza and tissue let light through. In sunlight or under bright wedding lights, your legs can show as a shape through the pleats, and a skin-tone layer evens out the look.
  • Chafing. A petticoat doesn't stop your thighs rubbing together. Over a long wedding day from pheras to vidaai, a reception or an evening of pandal-hopping, stockings act as a smooth barrier between your thighs.
  • Cold. A Delhi or Lucknow winter wedding with open lawns and late-night pheras is cold at the ankles and shins. A fleece-lined pair keeps you warm without changing how the saree looks.
  • Feet that show. A saree ends at the ankle, and your feet show with every step. Stockings give an even tone from ankle to toe.

For everything else that goes under the drape, start with what to wear under a saree.

In what order do you wear stockings, shapewear and petticoat?

  1. Stockings first. Roll them up from the toe and pull the waistband to your natural waist, so it sits above where the petticoat will tie. Pick your size by waist and hips from the stockings size chart; a pair that's too small will keep sliding down under the petticoat.
  2. Shapewear next, if you're wearing it. High-waist shaper shorts or saree shapewear go over the stockings. This keeps the stocking waistband flat and gives one smooth line at the hips.
  3. Petticoat. Tie the drawstring firmly at your usual saree height. The tie sits over both layers and helps hold them in place.
  4. Blouse, then drape. Tuck the pleats into the petticoat as usual and check that nothing from underneath is caught in them.
  5. Sit and walk. Sit cross-legged for a minute, the way you might at a puja, then walk a few steps. Straighten any twist in the stockings at the ankle now, while it's easy.

Practise the washroom routine once at home. Lifting the saree and petticoat while managing waist-high stockings and shapewear takes a little planning, especially in a crowded venue washroom.

How do you match stocking shade with a saree?

Match the stockings to your legs and feet, not to the saree. Your feet are what people see most, peeping out under the hem, so judge the shade there.

  • Test in daylight near a window, not under bathroom lights.
  • Look at your feet and ankles from standing height, the way other people will see them.
  • If a shade looks grey or ashy on you, go a step deeper; if it looks orange, go lighter or cooler.
  • Even under a black or very dark saree, a skin tone usually looks better at the ankle than black stockings, which can look heavy with ethnic wear.

Shapify's skin-colour stockings are made for Indian skin tones, and our guide to choosing skin-colour stockings for Indian skin explains undertones in detail.

What footwear works with stockings under a saree?

This is where most people get stuck. Footed stockings have a toe seam, and some have a thicker toe section, which looks odd in open sandals.

Footwear Stocking type Tip
Strappy sandals or heels Footless Make sure the ankle edge sits flat and doesn't show above the strap
Juttis and mojaris Footless, or footed if the jutti fully covers your toes Footed is warmer, but it can slide inside a smooth leather jutti
Kolhapuris or flat chappals Footless Toe-post styles don't work with footed stockings
Closed pumps or wedges Footed Common for office sarees and formal events
Barefoot at a temple, puja or home function Footless, or skip stockings Footed stockings are slippery on marble floors

The thermal fleece translucent stockings come both ways: with socks for closed shoes, or without socks for sandals, heels and juttis. The fleece lining keeps you warm and the skin-tone outer looks bare from a distance, which suits winter weddings. Whatever pair you choose, check whether it's footed or footless before you plan the footwear.

Are stockings too hot for a saree in summer?

They add a layer, so on a humid Chennai or Kolkata afternoon you'll feel it. For summer day functions, wear stockings only if the saree is sheer or chafing is a real issue for you, and choose the lightest pair you own. A featherlight pair like the anti-scratch stretchable stockings makes more sense in summer than anything lined. For a morning haldi or a cotton saree at home, leave them off.

In winter it flips. Fleece-lined stockings are what make a chiffon saree wearable on an outdoor lawn in December. Pair them with a thermal layer under the blouse and a well-draped shawl; how to wear a saree in winter covers the rest.

A few saree-specific snags to avoid

  • Heavy zari borders and sequin work can catch sheer stockings, mostly around the shins and ankles where the border falls. Pleat slowly, and choose a tear-resistant pair for heavily worked sarees.
  • Pins used to fix pleats and the pallu should point away from your legs.
  • Check that the stocking waistband isn't folded under the petticoat tie, or it will dig in by the end of the evening.
  • Keep a spare pair in your bag for weddings. Two-pair packs make this easy.

Stockings under a saree are a quiet helper: they even out sheer drapes, protect against thigh rub and keep you warm in winter. Put them on first, match them to your feet in daylight, choose footless for open footwear, and leave them off on hot days when the saree doesn't need them.

Frequently asked questions

Can we wear stockings with a saree?

Yes. Skin-tone stockings are commonly worn under sarees for sheer fabrics, chafing and winter warmth, and with a matched shade they don't draw attention.

Should stockings go over or under the petticoat?

Under. Put on stockings first, then shapewear if you're using it, and tie the petticoat over both.

Can I wear black stockings with a saree?

You can with a dark saree in winter for an Indo-western look. For most traditional drapes, a skin-tone shade looks more natural at the feet.

How do I stop stockings slipping down under a saree?

Choose your size by waist and hips, pull the waistband up to your natural waist and tie the petticoat over it. A silicone grip band also helps them stay put through the day.
