How to Hide Leg Scars, Marks and Veins with Stockings
Stockings can hide or soften most leg scars, marks and visible veins. Sheer skin-colour stockings even out tone and blur light pigmentation, small scars and thread veins. Darker or more opaque stockings cover more, and black hides the most. They can't flatten raised scars, and they don't treat veins: painful, swollen or bulging veins need a doctor.
Almost everyone has something on their legs they'd sometimes prefer not to show: a scar from a scooter fall, old mosquito-bite marks, patchy tone after waxing, a surgery scar, stretch marks or thread veins behind the knee. There's nothing wrong with any of it, and plenty of women never cover up. Stockings simply give you the option for a particular outfit or day.
How much can stockings actually hide?
Two things control coverage: opacity and shade.
Opacity is how much skin shows through. Sheer stockings work like a soft-focus filter: a dark mark looks lighter and blurrier, but you may still spot it up close. Opaque stockings work like a solid layer and hide almost everything, though they look clearly like stockings. Hosiery thickness is usually described in denier; our guide to stocking denier explains the scale.
Shade matters just as much. A shade that matches your skin evens out the overall tone. A shade a touch deeper than your skin hides marks better than one that's lighter, because a lighter stocking lays a pale film over everything and makes dark marks look grey rather than hidden.
What works for which kind of mark?
| Type of mark | What helps most | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven tone, tanning, pigmentation patches | Skin colour matched to your shins | Tone looks more even; darker patches soften |
| Old bite marks, small dark spots, waxing marks | Skin colour, a touch deeper than your skin | Most disappear at normal viewing distance |
| Flat, fully healed scars | Skin colour to soften; black to cover | Colour difference fades; outline may show in harsh light |
| Raised or textured scars | Black or more opaque styles | Colour hides well; texture can still show under close-fitting knit |
| Thread and spider veins | Skin colour slightly deeper, or black | The blue or purple tint softens or disappears |
| Stretch marks on thighs or knees | Skin colour or black | The colour difference softens; often above the hemline anyway |
| Lighter patches of skin | Skin colour matched to your overall tone, or black | Contrast reduces; whether to even it out is entirely your choice |
| Bruises | Black for full cover | Skin colour softens fading yellow-green bruises |
How to pick a shade for coverage
- Match the skin around the mark, not the mark itself.
- If you're between two shades, go deeper. Deeper hides; lighter highlights.
- Check in daylight by a window, from about a metre or two away, which is how people will actually see you.
- Test with the outfit on. A knee-length skirt shows only your lower legs, while a slit or a short dress shows more. The mark you're thinking about may sit above the hemline anyway.
On deeper skin especially, a too-light shade turns marks grey instead of hiding them; our guides to stockings for dusky and deep skin and skin-colour stockings for Indian skin tones go deeper into shade matching, including undertones.
Will people be able to tell?
It depends on distance and light. At normal conversation distance, two metres or so, a well-matched skin-colour pair hides most small marks and evens out tone; people see smooth legs, not stockings. At arm's length in daylight, you'll notice the knit, and a darker mark may look softened rather than gone. Bright stage lights, white LED lighting and close-up flash photos are the toughest tests, because flash shines through sheer knit. For a wedding where you'll be photographed up close, take a flash photo at home first and switch to black if the mark you care about still shows.
Do stockings help with varicose veins?
Not the fashion kind, and it's worth being clear about this. Regular stockings, including ours, are made for appearance and comfort. They can cover visible veins cosmetically, but they don't apply the graded medical compression that doctors sometimes prescribe, and they don't treat or prevent vein conditions.
If your veins are bulging, painful or itchy, or your legs swell, ache or feel heavy by evening, please see a doctor rather than covering it up. Medical compression stockings are a separate product, chosen with a doctor's guidance and fitted to specific measurements.
Also check with your doctor before wearing any close-fitting stockings over a recent surgery scar, an unhealed wound, broken skin or a new tattoo. Wait until the area has fully healed.
Can you use leg makeup with stockings?
You can, but most women find a well-chosen stocking is enough on its own. If you do use body concealer or leg makeup on a scar, let it set fully for 10 to 15 minutes before pulling the stockings on, and dress slowly. Otherwise it transfers onto the inside of the knit, streaks, and leaves a patch that's hard to wash out. Wash the pair the same night.
Which Shapify stockings to use
- For everyday coverage: our anti-scratch stretchable stockings come in Skin and Black, in sizes XS to 5XL. Coverage is something you judge on your own legs, so check how much shows through by a window on your first wear. The tear-resistant knit matters here more than you'd think: a ladder running across your shin draws more attention than the mark it was covering.
- For winter: our fleece-lined winter stockings have a fleece lining under a skin-tone, sheer-look outer, so legs look bare from a distance. Because the lining sits between your skin and the outer layer, this kind of construction tends to cover more than a thin pair.
- For full cover: black, from the same anti-scratch range.
Choose the shade around the mark, go deeper rather than lighter, and use black when you want complete cover. And if a mark or vein is new, changing, painful or swollen, see a doctor before reaching for stockings. You'll find our skin shades in the skin-colour stockings collection.
Frequently asked questions
Do skin-colour stockings hide tattoos?
Sheer skin-colour stockings soften small or light tattoos, but dark ink usually still shows. Black or opaque stockings are the reliable way to cover a tattoo for a formal event.
Can stockings hide leg hair?
They soften fine hair well. Dark hair can still show through a sheer skin-colour pair, while black stockings hide much more.
Can I wear stockings over a surgery scar?
Only once the wound has fully healed and your doctor is happy for you to wear close-fitting clothing over it. Until then, keep the area free of pressure and friction.
Do stockings hide cellulite?
A close-fitting knit smooths how skin texture looks, and black or more opaque pairs do this more than sheer ones. Dimpled texture on the thighs is very common, and whether to smooth it or show it is entirely your call.
