What to Wear Under a Deep-Neck Blouse or Plunge Dress
Under a deep-neck blouse or plunge dress, wear something whose centre sits lower than your neckline. For moderate necklines that's a plunge bra; for deeper V-necks, a strapless, backless sticky bra; for necklines that drop past the bust line, body tape with nipple covers. A tailor can also sew cups into the blouse so you need nothing else.
First, how deep is your neckline?
Every option depends on one thing: where the lowest point of the V ends. Stand in front of a mirror in the blouse or dress, or hold the design picture up against yourself, and find that point.
| Depth | Where the V ends | What usually works |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate | Above where a regular bra's centre would sit | A plunge bra, or a regular bra if the centre stays hidden |
| Deep | Between the breasts, around the fullest part of the bust | A plunge bra with a very low centre, a sticky bra, or built-in cups |
| Very deep | Past the bust line, towards the ribcage or waist | Body tape with nipple covers, or a blouse or dress with built-in support |
Then check the back. A deep front with a regular back is the easiest case, because you can still wear a band. A deep front with a deep or open back rules out anything with a band or straps, which leaves a sticky bra, tape or built-in cups. If that's your blouse, our guide on what to wear under a backless blouse covers the back half of the problem.
Which option suits which bust size?
Bust size changes how much support you'll want, especially for a long wedding day.
- A to B cups: you have the most freedom. A plunge bra, a sticky bra, built-in cups, or for very deep necklines, tape or even just nipple covers if the blouse itself has some structure.
- C cups: a plunge bra for moderate depths; a sticky bra for deeper necklines; tape when the V drops past the bust line.
- D cups: a plunge bra with underwire and firm side support is the most dependable for long events. A sticky bra in cup D covers 38B, 36C, 34D and 32DD and works well for evenings. Tape gives more lift if you add strips.
- Beyond D: lean on structure. A plunge bra with a firm band and underwire, or a blouse built with cups and a proper back closure, will feel steadier than adhesive alone. Our guide to sticky bras for heavier busts explains why.
Making a sticky bra work under a deep neck
The backless silicone sticky bra is strapless, backless and wire-free, with moulded foam cups that join at a centre front clip for lift. It comes in Black or Nude, cups B, C and D; the sticky bra size guide maps them to regular bra sizes.
Under a deep neck, the clip is the part to watch. A few tips:
- Angle the cups upward and slightly inward before you fasten the clip, so it sits where your cleavage naturally starts.
- Check that the clip ends up below the lowest point of the V. Look in the mirror while leaning forward, because that's when a neckline gapes.
- If the clip still shows, the neckline is probably in very-deep territory, and tape will serve you better.
- Pick Nude under light or sheer fabrics and Black under dark ones, so a glimpse at the edge doesn't stand out.
Apply it on clean, dry, lotion-free skin, and put it on after hair and makeup if it's a hot day.
Blouse fitting tips for deep necks
A deep-neck saree or lehenga blouse is half tailoring, half what goes underneath. These steps make the trial far more useful:
- Decide what you'll wear underneath before the first fitting. Then take it with you, and wear it to the trial. The tailor can cut the neckline around the actual bra instead of guessing.
- Ask about built-in cups. A padded blouse with cups sewn in is often the most comfortable answer for a deep neck, especially on long days. Make sure the cups are set at the right height and width for the neckline.
- Test it sitting and bending. Necklines that look fine standing can gape when you sit cross-legged at the mandap, bend to touch an elder's feet, or lean in for photos. Check all three at the fitting.
- Ask for a snug neckline edge. A neckline that lies flat against the skin hides the bra's edge far better than one that stands away. If it gapes slightly on the day, a strip of double-sided fashion tape along the inside edge holds fabric to skin.
- Choose a nude-toned lining for sheer blouses. White lining under net or tissue can show as a bright block around the neckline.
What about plunge dresses and gowns?
A cocktail gown or a wrap dress has no pallu or dupatta to soften the neckline, so edges matter more. The same depth rules apply, with a few differences.
Wrap dresses shift as you move, so whatever you wear needs to stay hidden even when the V opens a little wider; a sticky bra or tape tends to suit them. Stiff, structured gowns often have enough boning or lining that nipple covers alone are enough for smaller busts. Satin and other slippery fabrics show every line, so smooth, edge-free options are best there.
If you'd like your midsection smoother under a fitted plunge dress, keep the shaping below the bust. The high-waist tummy tucker smooths the lower belly, waist and upper thighs and stays well out of the neckline, so it works alongside a sticky bra or tape. Body tape and other adhesive options are listed in the sticky bra collection.
For any deep neckline, work in this order: find where the V ends, check the back, then match the option to your bust and the length of your day. Settle it before your first blouse fitting, so the tailor can cut the neckline around what you'll actually wear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a deep-neck blouse without a bra?
Yes, if the blouse has built-in cups or enough structure and you're comfortable with the support. Add nipple covers under thin or unlined fabric.
Will a sticky bra show in a deep-neck blouse?
Not if the centre clip sits below the lowest point of the V and the cup edges stay inside the blouse. Check in the mirror while leaning forward, which is when necklines gape most.
What bra goes with a blouse that's deep at the front and the back?
Anything with a band or straps will show, so choose a sticky bra, body tape, or ask your tailor to build cups into the blouse.
Is a plunge bra the same as a push-up bra?
No. A plunge bra has a low centre so it hides under V-necks; a push-up bra is padded to lift and bring the bust together. Some bras are both, but plenty of plunge bras have no push-up padding.
