What to Wear Under a Net Saree (and Other Sheer Sarees)
Under a net or sheer saree, everything you wear becomes part of the look, so each layer should match either the saree or your skin. Wear a full-length petticoat in the saree's base colour, choose whether your midriff will be bare or covered by a skin-matched bodysuit, and sort out the blouse back. Then test the whole outfit in daylight.
Why does a sheer saree change what goes underneath?
With an opaque saree, the drape hides your petticoat and the pallu hides most of your midriff. With net, organza, chiffon, tissue or sheer georgette, both show through. Three areas cause most of the trouble:
- The skirt section, where the petticoat's colour, hem, seams and side opening can be seen through the net.
- The midriff, visible through the pallu at the front and bare at the back waist.
- The blouse, if its sleeves or back panel are sheer, where bra straps and bands show.
The pleats are less of a worry. Folded over several times, they look far more opaque than the single layer of the pallu.
Which petticoat works under a net saree?
- Colour: match the base colour of the net, meaning the colour of the mesh itself, not the embroidery or sequins. A contrast petticoat under net is a deliberate style choice; if that isn't your plan, match.
- Length: the petticoat should reach the saree's hem with your heels on. A short petticoat leaves a visible line around your ankles.
- Fabric: cotton holds the tucks of slippery sheer fabric well. Satin adds a soft glow through the net but needs a couple of extra pins to keep the pleats in place.
- Opening: turn the petticoat so its side opening sits under the pleats, where the layers of net hide it.
- Finish: look for contrast stitching, a wide hem facing or a label. Through net, all of them show.
A fitted shapewear petticoat, often called a fishcut or mermaid petticoat, gives a closer line over the hips than a flared cotton one. Under a sheer saree its shape shows, so choose one in the saree's colour, or close to your skin for a barely-there look. For shaping that sits under the petticoat line, browse the saree shapewear collection.
Will shapewear show through a net saree?
Below the petticoat's waistline, shapewear is hidden as it would be under any saree. The issue is anything above that line. With a net pallu, you're effectively choosing between three looks:
| Midriff choice | What to wear | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Bare midriff (the traditional look) | Nothing above the line where the petticoat is tied | A high-waist edge showing through the pallu or at the back waist |
| Fully covered midriff | A bodysuit close to your skin tone, from bust to hips, under the blouse and petticoat | Flash photos up close, which show fabric texture rather than skin |
| Half covered | Avoid this | A band of fabric between blouse and saree reads as an obvious extra layer |
The in-between look is the one that goes wrong: the top few inches of a high-waist short peeking above the saree and visible through the pallu. A full bodysuit from bust to hips, on the other hand, reads from a distance as one smooth tone. The snatched bodysuit comes in a single nude shade and in black, so hold the nude against your midriff in daylight before you decide; if it isn't close to your skin, the bare-midriff route will look more natural.
What should you wear under a sheer blouse?
Many net blouses are lined at the bust with cups stitched in, and only the sleeves, back yoke or a side panel are sheer. Through those sheer areas, a regular bra band and straps show clearly.
- For a sheer back or a backless blouse, a strapless, backless option such as the backless silicone sticky bra removes the band altogether. Choose nude for light blouses and black for dark ones.
- For sheer sleeves only, a bra with straps set close to the neck is usually fine, as long as the straps sit under the lined section.
- If the whole blouse is sheer and unlined, ask your tailor to add a lining in the saree's colour or your skin tone. Underwear alone rarely looks right under fully sheer net.
When do skin-colour stockings help under a sheer saree?
Most of the time, the petticoat covers your legs. Stockings are worth adding in a few situations:
- Backlighting. Stage lights at a sangeet, mandap lights or a sunlit doorway can show the outline of your legs through net and a light petticoat. Skin-colour stockings give one even tone.
- Cold evenings. A net saree is chilly at a December function. Fleece-lined winter stockings in a footless style keep you warm and still work with heels.
- Chafing. Under a fitted shapewear petticoat, or on a long evening of walking, stockings stop your thighs rubbing.
Match stockings to your skin, not the saree. Browse skin-colour stockings, and if you're unsure of your shade, our guide to skin-colour stockings for Indian skin tones walks you through it.
How do you test a sheer saree before the event?
- Dress completely, including the petticoat, shapewear, blouse, bra and the heels you'll wear.
- Stand with your back to a sunny window and have someone photograph you from the front.
- Take a second photo in a dim room with the phone's flash on, since that's how many event photos are taken.
- Check both photos for the petticoat hem, its side opening, shapewear edges at the front and back waist, and bra bands through the blouse.
- Walk across the room and sit down, then check the pleats and pallu again.
- Fix what shows, then take the photos once more.
Treat a net saree as a see-through outfit and plan every layer on purpose: a matching, full-length petticoat, a clear decision about your midriff, and a fix for any sheer part of the blouse. For opaque sarees the rules are simpler, and our guide on what to wear under a saree covers them.
Frequently asked questions
What colour petticoat should I wear with a net saree?
Match the base colour of the net, not the embroidery or border. If the net is two-toned, go with the colour that covers the most area.
Can I wear a net saree without a petticoat?
Only with a full-length substitute such as a fitted shapewear petticoat in a matching colour. Without either, your legs and underwear will show through the net.
Should a net saree have a lining?
Some net sarees come with an attached lining in the skirt section, which makes the petticoat less critical. If yours doesn't, a well-matched petticoat does the same job.
How do I stop a net saree from looking puffy?
Net is springy, so press the pleats with a cool iron through a cloth, pin them top and bottom, and keep them fewer and narrower than you would with a soft silk.
