What to Wear Under a Sharara or Gharara: Shorts, Slips and Stockings
Under a sharara or gharara, wear high-waist shaper shorts. They smooth the lower belly where a short kurti ends, stop your thighs rubbing inside the flare, and give a sheer georgette or net sharara a neat base. Add skin-colour stockings under very sheer flares or on winter evenings, and choose your bra by the kurti's neckline and back.
Shararas and ghararas are back at mehendis, sangeets, Eid lunches and festive dinners, usually with a short kurti or a peplum on top. They look loose and forgiving, and mostly they are. The trouble spots are specific: a short kurti's hem landing right on the lower belly, thighs meeting inside all that fabric, and pastel georgette turning see-through in afternoon sun.
Sharara or gharara: what's the difference underneath?
They look alike on a hanger but sit differently on the body, so they need slightly different layers.
- Sharara: wide-legged and flared from the waist or hip, almost like a divided skirt. Nothing is fitted below the waistband, so the concerns are the waist, the lower belly under a short top, and thigh rub.
- Gharara: fitted from the waist to around the knee, then gathered at a seam (often covered with a gota or lace band) and flared below it. The fitted upper part shows underwear edges and thigh lines the way trousers do.
For a gharara, the leg edge of your shorts should end above the knee seam and lie flat, so it doesn't create a second line just above the gathers.
What should you wear under each sharara look?
| Outfit | What tends to show | Wear underneath |
|---|---|---|
| Short kurti with a flared sharara | The lower belly where the kurti ends, the drawstring knot | High-waist shaper shorts |
| Peplum top with a sharara | The waist seam where the peplum flares out | Shaper shorts, or a bodysuit if the top is fitted to the hip |
| Long kurta with a gharara | Lines across the fitted thigh section | Shaper shorts that end above the knee seam |
| Choli or crop top with a sharara | A bare midriff | Shorts only if the high waist stays hidden; otherwise skip them |
| Sheer georgette or net sharara | Your legs in sunlight and camera flash | Shorts plus a skin-shade lining or skin-colour stockings |
| Velvet or silk sharara for a winter function | Cold legs more than lines | Fleece-lined stockings, footless with juttis |
The high-waist tummy tucker covers the first four rows. The seamless knit and wide silicone-grip waistband lie flat under a short kurti, and the high waist gives the sharara's drawstring a smooth surface to sit on instead of a soft fold. With a crop top or a choli that shows your midriff, look in the mirror first: the band rises well above the navel, so it may peek out.
How do you stop thigh chafing in a sharara?
A sharara has metres of fabric, but your thighs still meet inside it. On a humid May evening, after an hour of dancing, that rubbing can leave the inner thighs sore before dinner is even served. The flare doesn't help, because the legs underneath are bare.
Shaper shorts fix this by putting a smooth layer between the thighs, and the tummy tucker's shorts length covers the upper thighs, where most rubbing happens. If you want anti-chafe cover without any shaping, light cotton cycling shorts do the same job without compression. Our guide on how to stop thigh chafing has more ways to manage the heat.
What should you wear under a sheer sharara?
Some shararas are lined only to the knee, or not at all, especially in georgette, chiffon and net. Indoors it rarely matters. At an afternoon haldi in a garden, or the moment a photographer's flash goes off, the outline of your legs shows through.
- Summer and day functions: ask your tailor for a full-length lining or a fitted inner pyjama in a shade close to your skin. White, or a pastel matching the sharara, shows through as a lighter block; a skin-close shade disappears.
- Cooler evenings: skin colour stockings even out the leg under the flare. The anti-scratch pair comes in a warm nude made for Indian skin tones, with a silicone grip band that keeps them up without rolling at the waist.
- Winter weddings: fleece-lined winter stockings look like sheer skin-colour stockings from a normal distance but feel like warm leggings. Choose the footless version for juttis and sandals. For heavier fabrics, see our guide on dressing under velvet in winter.
Stockings are sized by waist and hips. For example, a 31 to 33 inch waist with 38 to 40 inch hips is an L. Check the stockings size chart, and with the fleece-lined pair, lean to the larger size if you're on the line.
Can you dance and sit on the floor in a sharara?
Yes, and a sharara is one of the easiest outfits for both. What goes wrong is usually underneath: a waistband that rolls when you sit cross-legged on a mehendi gadda, or shorts that ride up during a dhol session. Test at home before the function:
- Floor test. Sit cross-legged on the floor for ten minutes, the way you would while your mehendi is applied. If the waistband folds or digs, the shorts are too small. Check the tummy tucker size chart and, between sizes, choose the larger.
- Dance test. Do a few steps with your arms raised and check whether the kurti lifts enough to show the shorts' waistband.
- Washroom test. Gather the flare in one hand and practise lowering the shorts with the other. Elastic-waist shararas are much quicker than drawstring ones.
- Mehendi timing. Pull everything up and tie the drawstring before your hands are done, since you won't want to touch fabric for a while afterwards.

A sharara is forgiving on top and demanding underneath. Shaper shorts handle the lower belly and the thigh rub, a skin-close lining or stockings handle sheer flares, and a quick floor-and-dance test at home tells you whether your size is right before the night.

SaleFrequently asked questions
Do you wear leggings under a sharara?
Not usually. A sharara is a complete garment, so leggings only add heat. Wear shaper shorts for a smooth line and no thigh rub, and stockings if the fabric is sheer or the evening is cold.
What do you wear under a gharara?
Shaper shorts that end above the knee seam, so the fitted thigh section looks smooth. The flared part below the knee needs nothing extra unless it's sheer.
Will shapewear show under a short kurti?
Not if the kurti covers the waistband when you sit and raise your arms. With a crop top or choli, the high waist may show, so check in a mirror first.
What colour lining should a pastel sharara have?
A shade close to your skin rather than one matching the sharara. A skin-close lining vanishes under sheer fabric, while white or pastel shows as a lighter block.
Can I wear a sharara in winter?
Yes. Velvet, silk and heavier shararas work well with fleece-lined stockings underneath, thermal socks with juttis and a shawl for outdoor functions.
