What to Wear Under a White or Sheer Dress (Hint: Not White)
Wear nude, not white, under a white or sheer dress. Your underlayer should match your own skin tone so it disappears instead of showing as a brighter patch. Choose smooth pieces without lace or prints, add a slip or lining if the fabric is see-through, and test the outfit in daylight and with camera flash before you wear it.
It feels backwards, which is why it catches so many people out. White on white seems logical in the trial room. Then you step into the sun at a daytime wedding, a Christmas lunch or a beach holiday, and the outline of your bra and underwear is the first thing anyone sees in the photos.
Why does white underwear show under a white dress?
White fabric is never fully opaque. Light passes through it and bounces back off whatever is underneath. Skin reflects less light than white fabric does, so a white bra or brief shows up as a brighter patch with sharp edges. A nude layer close to your skin tone reflects much the same as the skin around it, so the eye reads it all as one surface.
Black and bright colours show even more, unless you're wearing them on purpose as part of a layered look. Lace, embroidery and printed underwear also show their texture through white, even when the colour is right.
How do you find a nude that disappears?
"Nude" isn't one colour. A pale beige made for very fair skin shows up as a light, greyish patch on wheatish, dusky and deep skin tones, which covers most of India. You want the shade closest to your own skin, checked in daylight.
- Fair to light skin: light beige with a pink or peach warmth
- Wheatish or medium skin: warm honey, caramel or tan
- Dusky to deep skin: deeper bronze, cocoa or espresso tones
Undertone matters too. If gold jewellery suits you more than silver, lean warmer. Some women with medium to deep skin find a muted rose or terracotta tone disappears under white better than any beige. The test below settles it either way, and our undertone guide for Indian skin goes into more detail.
When a new nude piece arrives, hold it against your inner wrist and your stomach near a window before you plan an outfit around it. A shade slightly off your skin often still disappears under a lined or heavier white fabric, but give it the full test below before you wear it under thin cotton or voile.
The daylight-and-flash test
- Put on the complete outfit: underwear, bra or bodysuit, any slip, then the dress.
- Stand about a metre from a window in daylight, first facing it, then with your back to it. Backlight is when sheer fabric shows the most.
- Ask someone to take a photo with the phone flash on, from two or three metres away. Flash shows through white fabric far more than room light does.
- Check the back view: bra band, underwear edges and the leg line of any shaper.
- Sit down and stand up again. Fabric stretched over the hips and thighs becomes thinner and more transparent.
- If something shows, change one thing at a time: shade first, then edges, then add a slip or lining.
For edges and lines more generally, see how to make shapewear invisible.
Which layers do you actually need?
| Outfit | Underneath | Extra layer |
|---|---|---|
| White cotton or linen sundress | Nude seamless underwear and bra | A nude slip if the fabric is thin |
| Fitted white dress | A nude bodysuit for one smooth line | Usually none |
| White chikankari kurta with palazzos | Nude bra and underwear | A skin-tone camisole if the kurta is unlined |
| White anarkali or lehenga | Nude shaper shorts; a bra suited to the blouse back | A lining in the skirt |
| White or ivory dress in winter | Nude bodysuit or shaper shorts | Skin-colour stockings |
| White kurta for Holi | Nude everything, since dark colours show when wet | A skin-tone camisole and shorts |
For fitted white dresses, our bodysuit shapewear comes in nude and gives one smooth layer from bust to hips that covers the bra band and underwear edges. Under flared or longer white outfits, where thigh rub is the bigger concern, high-waist shaper shorts in a shade close to your skin give shorts-length coverage instead. Under a thin white sundress with an open back, a nude sticky bra avoids the band altogether.
Whatever bra you choose, smooth moulded cups beat lace or seamed cups under white, and the band should lie flat. A band that digs in creates a ridge that shows through white fabric even when the colour is exactly right.
Slips, linings and stockings
If the dress is still see-through with the right nude underneath, add a layer rather than more shapewear.
- A slip or camisole in your skin tone reduces transparency without adding a visible edge, as long as it ends above the hem.
- A lining from your tailor. For kurtas and lehengas, ask for a lining close to your skin tone rather than bright white. A white lining cuts the see-through effect but can still glow in flash photos.
- Skin-colour stockings under a white midi or maxi in winter keep your legs warm and make the leg under a sheer skirt read as one even tone. Our skin-colour stockings are made for Indian skin tones; still, check the shade against your leg in daylight. Black stockings with a white dress are a deliberate high-contrast look, good for a party, less so for a quiet daytime one.
Under white, match your skin, not the dress. Pick the closest nude you can find, keep edges smooth and plain, and add a slip or lining if the fabric needs it. Five minutes at a sunny window with a phone camera will tell you more than any mirror.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wear a black bra under a white dress?
Only if you want it to show as part of the look. Black is the most visible colour under white, especially in daylight and in photos.
What colour bra is invisible under white on dusky skin?
A nude a shade or two deeper than you might expect, in a warm caramel, bronze or cocoa tone. Pale beige tends to show as a light patch on deeper skin.
How do I make a white dress less see-through?
Wear underlayers in your skin tone, add a slip or camisole, or ask a tailor to line it. Check the result with your back to a sunny window, which is when sheer fabric shows the most.
Can you see shapewear through a white dress?
You can if it's the wrong shade or its edges sit where the fabric is tight. Nude shapewear with its edges placed where the dress is looser usually disappears.
