How to Remove Boob Tape Without Pain: The Oil Method and More

To remove boob tape without pain, don't pull it straight off. Soak the edges with coconut, almond or baby oil, wait five to ten minutes, then peel slowly, keeping the tape low against your skin while your other hand holds the skin flat. A few minutes under a warm shower loosens it the same way.

Why does boob tape hurt so much coming off?

After several hours on warm skin, body tape bonds firmly to the outermost layer of skin and to every fine hair under it. Pull it fast and upward, and you lift some of that skin layer along with it. That's the sting, and on sensitive skin it can leave redness or a raw patch that lasts for days.

Oil and warm water both work by getting between the adhesive and the skin and weakening the bond. Peeling low and slow does the rest: the skin isn't stretched up and away with the tape. It takes a few extra minutes at the end of a long night, which is exactly when you least want to spend them. Keep the oil and cotton pads out on the dressing table before you leave, so they're waiting for you.

The oil method, step by step

  1. Do it the same night. Don't sleep in tape. The longer it stays on, the harder it grips and the more your skin protests.
  2. Pick a plain oil. Coconut oil from the kitchen is fine, as are almond, olive or baby oil. Skip strongly scented oils and essential-oil blends on skin that has been taped all evening.
  3. Soak the edges first. Dip a cotton pad in oil and dab it generously along the top end of each strip, then over the surface of the tape. Many body tapes have a fabric backing that lets oil seep through slowly.
  4. Wait five to ten minutes. Take off your jewellery or remove your makeup while it works. Top up the oil once if the edges still look dry.
  5. Lift a corner with your fingertip. Roll it gently rather than digging in with a nail.
  6. Peel low and slow. Fold the tape back over itself so it moves almost parallel to your skin, not up and away from it. With your other hand, press down on the skin just in front of the line where the tape is lifting.
  7. Keep oiling as you go. Dab a little more oil into the gap where tape meets skin every few centimetres. If it resists, stop, add oil and wait another minute.
  8. Work strip by strip, in reverse order. The last strip you put on comes off first, and the nipple covers come off last.
  9. Wash the area. Use lukewarm water and a mild soap to lift the oil and any adhesive left behind, then pat dry with a soft towel.

Other ways to loosen tape (and what not to use)

Oil is the most dependable at home, but it isn't the only option.

Method How to do it Good for Watch out for
Oil Soak the edges, wait five to ten minutes, peel slowly Most people, most tapes Oil on clothes; change into an old T-shirt first
Warm shower Let lukewarm to warm water run over the tape for five to ten minutes, then peel under the water When you're exhausted and want one step Not hot water; very hot water irritates freshly taped skin
Oil-based cleanser or makeup remover Use like oil; cleansing balms work too When you're already removing makeup Fragrance in some cleansers can sting
Adhesive remover wipes from a pharmacy Follow the pack instructions Very stubborn tape Patch test first; ask the pharmacist if your skin is sensitive
Ripping it off fast Not recommended Nothing Pain, redness and skin that stays sore for days

Never use nail polish remover, acetone, spirit, rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser on your chest to dissolve tape, and don't scrape at it with your nails or a blade. They irritate skin far more than the tape does.

How to get sticky residue off your skin

Patches of adhesive often stay behind, especially where the strip ends were. Massage a little oil over each patch in small circles with your fingertips for a minute or two, then wipe it with a soft cotton cloth. Wash with mild soap and lukewarm water and repeat once if needed. Leave the loofah and the exfoliating glove for another day; skin that has just had tape on it doesn't need scrubbing.

Any residue left on your nipple covers, if they're reusable silicone ones, comes off with lukewarm water and mild soap, fingertips only.

Aftercare for the skin under the tape

  • Pat the area dry. Don't rub with a rough towel.
  • If you normally use a fragrance-free moisturiser, apply a thin layer once the skin is clean and dry.
  • Sleep in a loose cotton top, nothing tight or synthetic over the area.
  • If the skin looks pink, don't tape that area again for a day or two. During a wedding week, plan at least one function with a regular or strapless bra so the skin gets a break.
  • See a doctor if you notice blisters, broken or weeping skin, a rash that spreads, or soreness that hasn't eased within a day or two.

How to make removal easier next time

Painless removal starts when the tape goes on. Round every corner when you cut strips, keep the ends stretch-free, always use nipple covers, and apply only on unbroken skin that you've patch tested. Our step-by-step guide on how to apply boob tape covers each of these, neckline by neckline.

If you'll be dressing up several days in a row, it can help to alternate tape with something that comes off more gently. The backless silicone sticky bra peels off in two cups rather than many strips and is reusable after washing; our guide on sticky bras and sensitive skin explains how to test and wear one gently. For tape, sticky bras and related pieces, see the sticky bra collection.

Oil, wait, then peel low and slow. Five extra minutes at the end of the night saves you a sore chest the next morning, and the next function in the week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove boob tape in the shower?

Yes. Let lukewarm to warm water run over the tape for five to ten minutes until the edges soften, then peel it slowly while you're still under the water.

Is it okay to leave boob tape on overnight?

It's better not to. The longer tape stays on, the firmer it grips and the more likely your skin is to get irritated, so remove it the same night.

What should I do if boob tape pulled off some skin?

Keep the area clean and dry, don't put tape or adhesive on it until it has fully healed, and see a doctor if it is raw, weeping or getting more painful.

How long should I leave oil on before peeling tape?

Five to ten minutes is usually enough for the oil to seep in. If the tape still resists, add a little more oil and wait another minute or two.
