How to Apply Boob Tape: Step-by-Step for Every Neckline

To apply boob tape, start with clean, dry, lotion-free skin and a patch test done a day earlier. Cover your nipples first. Cut strips long enough to run from under the breast to your upper chest, round the corners, anchor each strip below the breast without stretching it, lift, then smooth it upward. Overlap strips by about half.

What you need before you start

Give yourself 20 unhurried minutes in good light, ideally before your hair and makeup so you're not sweating under the lights. Keep these ready:

  • Body tape made for skin. Never packing tape, cello tape or surgical tape from the medicine box; they aren't designed for this and can hurt badly coming off.
  • Sharp scissors, kept just for tape so the cut edges stay clean.
  • Nipple covers. Many body tapes come with them, Shapify's Pro Stylist tape included. A folded square of soft tissue is a last resort.
  • The outfit itself, and a full-length mirror.
  • Coconut, almond or baby oil for removal later, so you aren't hunting for it at 1 am.

How to apply boob tape, step by step

  1. Patch test the day before. Stick a short strip on the side of your chest for a couple of hours, remove it slowly and check the skin that evening and next morning. Redness that lingers, itching or bumps mean don't use it.
  2. Prepare the skin. Wash the area with plain soap, rinse and dry fully. No moisturiser, oil, sunscreen, powder or perfume. Let your skin cool down for 10 to 15 minutes if you've just bathed.
  3. Put the nipple covers on. Tape should never sit directly on the nipple. It is painful to remove and can damage the skin there.
  4. Measure against your body, then cut. Hold the tape from the crease under your breast up to where the strip should end, usually just below the collarbone or towards the shoulder. Most strips end up roughly 15 to 25 cm long, depending on your bust and the neckline. Smaller busts often manage with two strips per side; fuller busts usually need three or four.
  5. Round every corner. Snip the square corners into curves. Sharp corners catch on blouse lining and start the peel.
  6. Anchor the bottom. Peel back the first few centimetres of backing and press that end onto the skin below the breast, with no stretch at all.
  7. Lift and lay. With your other hand, lift the breast into the position you want. Peel the backing gradually as you smooth the tape upward, with only light tension in the middle of the strip. Lay the last few centimetres down with no stretch.
  8. Overlap the next strip. Each new strip covers about half the width of the previous one. Work in the direction your neckline needs (see the table below).
  9. Rub each strip. Run your palm along each strip for a few seconds. The warmth helps the adhesive settle.
  10. Test the outfit. Put it on, raise both arms, sit, bend as if touching an elder's feet and twist. If an edge shows or lifts, adjust now, not at the venue.

Tape patterns for each neckline

The basic lift is the same everywhere. What changes is the angle of the strips and where they must stop so they stay hidden.

Neckline Where the strips go Tip
Deep V or plunge Diagonally from under the breast up towards the outer shoulder Start at the outer side and work towards the centre; keep the innermost strip a finger's width inside the neckline edge
Backless blouse or dress Lift strips from the underside to the upper chest; nothing goes round the back Check the side view; a deep armhole can reveal the outer strip
Strapless, tube or off-shoulder All strips end below the neckline; add one or two strips from the side of the ribcage angled in towards the centre The side strips push inward, which gives shape when there's no strap to lift from
One-shoulder Bare side angles towards the bare shoulder; covered side can run straight up Do the bare side first, then match the height on the other
Halter Strips angle up and inward towards the base of the neck Keep them inside the halter straps' line so they don't peek out at the sides
Sheer, net or mesh panels Avoid tape under see-through areas Tape shows through sheer fabric; a sticky bra or a blouse with built-in cups works better here

For deep necklines specifically, our guide on what to wear under a deep-neck blouse compares tape with a plunge bra and a sticky bra by bust size.

Common mistakes that make tape fail or hurt

  • Stretching the whole strip. Tape laid under full tension pulls on the skin all evening and is more likely to irritate. Keep the ends stretch-free.
  • Taping over the nipples. Always use covers.
  • Wrapping tape around the back. It restricts your breathing and is miserable to take off. Lift comes from the front strips, not from a band.
  • Reusing a strip you've peeled off. Once lifted, it has lost much of its grip. Cut a fresh one.
  • Taping broken, sunburnt or freshly waxed skin. Give skin a day or two after waxing, and skip tape on any rash or cut.
  • Ripping it off at the end of the night. Oil and patience make removal painless; our guide on how to remove boob tape without pain has the method.

Boob tape or a sticky bra: which suits your outfit?

Tape is the more flexible tool. It works with plunges cut almost to the waist, one-shoulder and asymmetric necklines, side cut-outs, and fuller busts that need more lift, because you can add strips. The trade-offs are time, a fresh set of strips every wear, and a slower removal.

A sticky bra is quicker and reusable. The backless silicone sticky bra has moulded foam cups, which cover the nipples, and a centre front clip for lift. It suits backless blouses, strapless dresses and moderate plunges, in cups B, C and D. If you're unsure which to buy, the sticky bra collection shows what's available right now.

Take the first attempt slowly, at home, a few days before the event. Once you've done it once with your actual outfit, the second time on the wedding day takes half as long.

Frequently asked questions

How long can you keep boob tape on?

Wear it for the length of your event and take it off the same night. Don't sleep in it, and give the skin a break before taping the same area again.

Can I reuse boob tape?

No. Once a strip has been peeled off it picks up skin flakes and lint and loses much of its grip, so cut fresh strips each time.

Does boob tape work for big breasts?

It can, because you can add more strips for more lift. Fuller busts usually need three or four overlapping strips per side, and a patch test is just as important.

Is boob tape waterproof?

Some body tapes handle light sweat, but water and heavy sweat loosen most of them. Apply it after your bath, on fully dry skin, and don't plan to swim in it.
